Check off-premises and theft sublimits

Bicycles, jewelry, business property, cash, electronics, and other categories may have special limits. Read those limits before estimating the renters claim.

Document both parts of the event

Photograph broken glass, locks, or entry points before repair when possible. Make a separate list of property taken from the vehicle.

  • Police/incident number.
  • Vehicle repair estimate.
  • Stolen-property inventory.
  • Receipts, serial numbers, or photos.

Separate vehicle damage from stolen belongings

Auto insurance generally handles damage to the vehicle itself, while a renters policy may address covered personal property stolen from the vehicle, subject to deductible, off-premises limits, and exclusions.
