Let the insurer investigate liability
Report the incident promptly and avoid promising payment or deciding legal fault yourself. Preserve the facts so the insurer can evaluate the claim under the policy.
Read the animal-liability wording
Renters policies can differ on animal exclusions, restrictions, and liability limits. The fact that you own renters insurance does not by itself answer whether a specific animal incident is covered.
- Check the liability section and exclusions.
- Ask whether the animal was disclosed or subject to underwriting restrictions.
- Review medical-payments-to-others separately from liability coverage.
Document the animal incident
A dog-bite or other animal injury claim needs a clear record of the animal, location, people involved, and what happened before and after the incident.
- Save incident photos and witness/contact information.
- Keep medical or demand documents sent to you.
- Record landlord or property-manager communications.
- Save vaccination or animal-control records if they become part of the claim.
