Separate normal spending from extra spending
ALE usually focuses on the increase above normal living expenses. Keep the baseline visible so hotel, meal, laundry, parking, pet, and transport increases can be documented clearly.
Plan temporary housing with the limit in mind
Before committing to a long or expensive stay, ask about the applicable dollar/time limit and what expenses the insurer considers reasonable.
Confirm the coverage trigger
Loss-of-use or additional-living-expense coverage generally requires a covered loss that makes the residence unfit or unusable under the policy terms. Leaving the unit for convenience is not automatically the same thing.
- Identify the covered property loss.
- Save any unsafe/uninhabitable notice or landlord communication.
- Ask the adjuster when ALE begins and ends.
