Claim guide

Police Report for Theft

Use this guide to ask when a report number is needed.

Reviewed August 11, 2026. Educational insurance information, not a quote or coverage promise.

Keep separate proof of ownership

Receipts, photos, account records, warranties, and pre-loss inventory records help establish ownership and value beyond the incident report.

Match the report to the claim inventory

Use consistent descriptions, serial numbers, and quantities. If you discover an omitted item later, ask the appropriate agency how supplemental information is handled rather than altering your records informally.

Record the report details

A police report can document that a theft was reported, the location, date, incident number, and property described. It does not by itself prove every item’s value or coverage.

  • Agency and incident number.
  • Date/time reported.
  • Items listed in the report.
  • Officer/contact instructions for corrections or supplemental property lists.
