Keep originals and totals
Photograph or scan receipts and maintain a running spreadsheet or note. Do not rely on a pile of card statements at the end of a long displacement.
Save proof that connects the expense to the loss
Keep the claim number, adjuster instructions, landlord repair timeline, and any written approval that explains why the expense was necessary.
Build an expense ledger

- Pet boarding or transport when relevant.
