Preserve proof of ownership
Home inventories, photos taken before the loss, receipts, warranties, and account records can help establish what you owned.
Check theft sublimits
Jewelry, cash, bicycles, collectibles, business property, and other categories may have lower theft limits than the headline personal-property limit. Read the policy before estimating recovery.
Secure the scene and document the loss
Record what was stolen, where it was located, and any signs of entry or damage. A renters claim for property stolen from a vehicle is separate from damage to the vehicle itself.
- Police/incident report when appropriate.
- Photos of entry or damage.
- Item list with receipts, serial numbers, or order history.
