Claim guide

Water Damage Claim

Use this guide to separate sudden pipe damage from seepage and maintenance issues.

Reviewed August 11, 2026. Educational insurance information, not a quote or coverage promise.

Match the cause to the policy

Read the water exclusion and any backup endorsement beside the covered-peril wording. Do not rely on the generic phrase 'water damage.'

Prevent additional damage safely

Follow emergency and landlord instructions, preserve evidence when possible, and keep cleanup or temporary-housing receipts.

Document where the water came from

Coverage often turns on the source and timing: sudden discharge from plumbing is different from flood, groundwater, repeated seepage, or sewer backup.

  • Photograph the source and affected property.
  • Save landlord/plumber reports.
  • Record when the leak was discovered and stopped.
