Keep the lease in the comparison
Lease pet rules, deposits, and renter liability requirements operate alongside the insurance contract. Read both documents before assuming one replaces the other.
Read animal restrictions and property exclusions
Ask whether the policy has animal/breed restrictions, whether accidental damage to the landlord’s property is covered, and whether your own property damaged by a pet is excluded.
Damage by your pet and liability for your pet are different questions
A renters policy may treat damage your pet causes to your own belongings, damage to the rented premises, and injury to another person differently. A pet deposit is also not the same thing as insurance coverage.
