Budget for displacement
Review the loss-of-use or additional-living-expense limit and conditions. Consider what temporary lodging, food, laundry, parking, pets, and transport could cost above normal spending after a covered loss.
Check sublimits before raising the headline limit
A larger personal-property limit does not necessarily increase every special category limit. Review jewelry, cash, bicycles, business property, firearms, collectibles, and other sublimits in the actual policy.
Choose liability deliberately
A landlord may specify a minimum liability limit, but that minimum is not automatically the right amount for every renter. Compare available limits and consider the financial consequences of a covered liability claim.
Start with a home inventory
Estimate personal property room by room. The goal is to approximate what it would cost to replace covered belongings, then check whether the quote uses actual cash value or replacement cost.
